What is Military Tuition Assistance (TA)?

Our service members are tasked with the responsibility of keeping us safe from threats both internal and external. To help them bear the weight and burden of life, the government has in place several financial and educational aids for them. One of them is military tuition assistance. In this article, our experienced team will be breaking down the various elements of the program.

Military Tuition Assistance

This program can be categorized as a financial education tool that is eligible to a service member of the Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force, and National Coast Guard. The program is supported by a bill from Congress that allows the different services to pay up to 100% of tuition-related costs of their members.

Congress has left it open to the different service branches to determine the eligibility, application process, and other details that would determine eligibility by the respective service members. The tuition is paid by the service directly to the institutions in question.

It should be noted that military tuition assistance is not a loan. To add, if the costs for a selected course are higher, active service members can choose to use the GI Bill ‘top-up’.

Detailed service needs

In this section, we will be breaking down the requirements of the different service branches when it comes to the TA program.

Only active duty members and reserves are eligible for the TA program in the Air Force. The service covers $250 per semester hour, $166 per quarter-hour, and $4,500 per fiscal year.

The terms of eligibility in the army are a bit different from the Air Force, just as previously mentioned. The eligible members include Army reserves, ARNG on Active Duty, and active service duty members. The Army’s TA program covers 16 semester hours. With regard to other costs, it covers $250, $166, and $4,000 per semester hour, per quarter-hour, and the cost per fiscal year.

Next up, we have the requirements for the Navy. The Navy’s coverage is similar to that of the Air Force. The members of the Navy who are legible to their TA program include active duty service members and naval reserves in AD Status.

The Marines’ coverage requirements are similar to that of the Navy. When it comes to eligibility, the only members eligible for the TA are active duty service members.

If you are looking into a service branch to join, you can use the above information to help you make a decision.
